The theoretical struggle is a key component of the class struggle. Without revolutionary theory there can be no revolutionary movement. Capitalism is facing the deepest crisis in its history. The ruling class can offer no real way forward for the vast majority of people.
The In Defence of Marxism magazine – produced by the International Marxist Tendency – is a tool and a weapon for revolutionary class fighters all over the world, offering serious Marxist analysis on theoretical questions and burning issues of the workers’ movement.

We must answer the dominant ideas of the bourgeois and the reformists, and cut through the distortions about the ideas of Marxism. The aim of this magazine is to allow our supporters – especially those new to Marxism – to do this.
Issue 45 of In Defence of Marxism is themed around the African revolution. It contains a wealth of articles on the struggle against imperialism, and the permanent revolution.
In 50 years since the Ethiopian Revolution, Ben Curry analyses the complex and often contradictory events that laid the basis for the proletarian bonapartism of Mengistu.
Jules Legendre gives an account of the ‘forgotten war’ waged by French imperialism in Cameroon in the 1950-60s. And Jorge Martin subjects Fanon’s Wretched of the Earth to a Marxist critique.
This issue also carries Lenin’s draft theses on the colonial question, as well as Trotsky’s letter to South African revolutionaries. Both show the genuine communist approach to the struggle of oppressed nations.
Mutilated and strangled by imperialism for centuries, Africa is today the world’s youngest and fastest growing continent. Under the impact of the world capitalist crisis, it is being transformed into a cauldron of revolutionary anger.
A study of the history and lessons of revolutionary struggle in Africa is therefore a topic of vast importance for communists preparing for the world revolution.
