We are living in a time of crisis, war, and revolution.
In times like these, there is nothing more important than doing what is necessary: preparing for the immense class battles that lie ahead.
The global economy is in crisis, and tensions are rising between the imperialist powers. Attacks on the working class through cuts and inflation are on the order of the day.
We have entered a period of revolution and counter-revolution – as can be seen from Myanmar to Sudan to Sri Lanka.
And Britain is not cut off from these revolutionary developments – far from it. Previously one of the most stable capitalist powers in the world, Britain is now one of the weakest links in the chain of world capitalism.
There is a deep-seated anger and desire for change in society. The establishment has never been more discredited. The Tory regime only stumbles from one crisis (and leader) to another, much to the despair of the ruling class. And the death of the Queen has highlighted the rotten role of the monarchy, and the stark class divide in Britain.
The unions are moving from isolated disputes to large national ballots, involving tens of thousands of workers at a time. There is talk of coordinated action between the unions. The idea of a general strike has even been raised by trade union leaders. This is a sign that enormous class battles are brewing.
But as the disgraceful behaviour of the right-wing bureaucracy in Unison has demonstrated, another struggle is also beginning to develop within the labour movement itself: for democratic, fighting unions with a clear-sighted, bold, socialist leadership.
Only the revolutionary ideas of Marxism, represented by a powerful organisation of Marxists in the movement, can guarantee success in this vital struggle. And it is precisely this organisation that Socialist Appeal and the International Marxist Tendency are trying to build.
The last few years has seen our tendency grow rapidly, raising the need for more full-time comrades: to help organise our campaigns and activities; to write articles and produce podcasts; to maintain our website and publications to the highest possible standard; and to coordinate our work up and down the country.
But this also raises the urgent need for more office space and equipment, at a time when costs are rising across the board, and with landlords eager to push up rents as much – and as often – as possible.
For this reason, at our last national conference in the Spring, we launched a campaign to raise the necessary funds to purchase our very own office space, with the aim of raising £200,000 in donations by the end of this year.
With this money, in combination with full-time comrades working for the International Marxist Tendency, we could buy a suitable office that will give us more control over our own future, in that we will not be subject to the whims of a landlord, who could evict us if they so wish.
Buying our own office will also save us potentially thousands of pounds in extortionate rents. This would mean that we could use the resources raised from the hard work and sacrifice of our supporters to hire new full-timers, expand and improve our material, and take the ideas of Marxism to every corner of the labour movement.
At the time of writing, we have raised roughly £140,000, leaving us within reach of our target. We have been blown away by the response of our comrades and supporters so far, with many comrades pledging a week’s wages – or more – to support the campaign.
We therefore have £60,000 to raise between now and the end of the year, if we are to reach our target. If you would like to support our revolutionary work, then please make a donation towards this goal.
Large or small, your donation will go quite literally into establishing a firm foundation for the International Marxist Tendency – not only in Britain, but the world over.
Forward to a new office! Forward to the socialist revolution!
