Sparks campaign: NY and London Print E-mail
By Felix Lighter
Friday, 17 February 2012

From New York to Mayfair the Sparks protest was heard around the world!

NEW YORK

Around 50 Teamsters, Sheetmetal workers and Local 79 Labourersturned up to protest outside Balfour Beatty's NY office this week. Union cleaners took leaflets in and the cops had to be called out in the end. They were sending a clear message of solidarity to site workers here who are standing up to the Besna bosses.

Here are some pics:

LONDON - MAYFAIR

Meanwhile in London, Toffs in penguin suits were forced to get out of their taxis and limos and walk down Park Lane after Central London was brought to a standstill by protesting siteworkers and others as part of the ongoing campaign against the construction companies attempts to force through massive pay cuts and loss of conditions for Sparks and Pipefitters. The companies had organised their annual dinner at the flash Grovesnor Hotel in Park Lane Mayfair, home to Austin Martin car dealers and the most expensive apartments in the world.  So the siteworkers turned up too...

Soon, as dusk fell, the hotel staff were treated to music blaring out of a loudspeaker and a giant inflatable rat.Unite flags were flying with other unions also lending support.  The protest soon spilled out onto the street with people blocking traffic causing chaos throughout central London. The police were AWOL at the time so it took over an hour before order could be restored, hence the need for dinners to start walking... the message to them was clear - you can run but you can't hide!

STOP PRESS: After they lose case to stop strike action, Balfour Beatty have been reported as withdrawing from Besna! More later as we get it.
