This is a really valuable book for socialists. Ironically its
strength, as well as its weakness, is that it’s not written from a ‘political’
position. Nick Davies is an established and excellent investigative
reporter. He writes from the point of view of a practitioner defending
professional standards, seeking to explain, within those terms, why so much
British journalism is so wrong.

In a bizarre but brilliant turn of editorial line, BBC’s
Newsnight has launched an apparently socialist documentary series on China. At
least, that was how it appeared on the basis of Paul Mason’s excellent report
on Wednesday 26th March, to be followed up the following week.

Paul Mason takes nine examples from labour history over the past 190 years and
compares them to struggles that are taking place today. This is a book that every young activist, trade unionist or socialist
will want to read. Julian Shapre reviews ‘Live working or die
fighting: how the working class went global’.

The 'Shock Doctrine', the latest from Naomi Klein, is the story of "blank is beautiful - three
decades of erasing and reinventing the world". It is about how natural disasters have given capitalists the opportunity to
reconstruct cities like New Orleans according to their own whims. But it is not just natural
disasters which have given the capitalists the opportunity to advance their
interests - there are man-made disasters as well - economic crises and wars.

The Grunwick strike was the first dispute where
a majority of strikers who were from ethnic minorities received widespread
support from the labour movement. This pamphlet and DVD should be seen by those
who did not live through the event. The strike also gives a
different twist to the current debate about multiculturalism - there was no
doubt in those days that the strikers at Grunwick belonged in the trades union
movement, regardless of their ethnic background or culture. Workers from all
different cultures were united at Grunwicks.
