Socialist Appeal in the UK congratulates
our comrades in the USA on the publication of the
first US edition of Bolshevism: The Road to Revolution by Alan Woods.
This marks a great step forward for the forces of Marxism in the US and
we are sure this publication will be a great success. We reproduce inside the online blurb issued by the comrades.

The second edition of the Marxist International Review is now available. The
present issue deals exclusively with the issue of the Black struggle in
the United States and the question of Self-determination. This issue
came to the fore during the 1960s with the Civil Rights movement and
the emergence of radical Black nationalism.

Socialist Appeal has produced a leaflet for today's lobby of
construction workers outside the T&G (Unite) HQ in London. The
leaflet calls for Unite to call for an immediate national strike in
construction, to protect jobs, to extend and improve the NAECI
agreement to all construction projects. This leaflet should be downloaded and used at all construction protests.

The begining of this year marks the anniversaries of the Cuban and Iranian revolution, as well as the founding of the Communist International. The Stalinist degeneration of the Soviet Union, and subsequently the Communist International, undoubtedly had far-reaching effects on the outcome of revolutionary movements throughout the 20th century. Come to the Socialist Appeal Marxism Day School in central London on Saturday 14th February, where we will discuss the lessons of the past so as to better prepare for the battles of the future. Download the leaflet and help advertise the meeting.

Only the united struggle of the workers of Israel, Palestine, Egypt and elsewhere can offer a way forward. The only solution to the problems of the masses within the Middle East is through the establishment of a Socialist Federation. Only such a federation could solve the national question once and for all. Only a fundamental change in the class relations in the region - leading to the abolition of landlordism and capitalism - can offer a way out. Download this Socialist Appeal leaflet on the war in Gaza.

John reviews Boris Johnson’s presentation of
the TV series ‘After Rome’ quite favourably. He even finds hope for redemption
for Boris, as long as he gives up Tory politics. ‘Crikey’, as Boris would no
doubt say. Well, this is the season of goodwill. What do you think?

It is probably clear to most of our readers that American
capitalism has entered a period of acute crisis. Even the boom preceding this
recession was one marked by the emergence of the ‘rust belt’ – decaying cities
once epicentres of the world’s most prosperous industrial working class, such
as Detroit and Baltimore. Baltimore, which is majority black, used to have one
of the US’ most wealthy black populations. It is now synonymous with crime,
drugs and decaying industry, with the second highest murder rate in America.
And all this before the looming recession. It is no wonder it has been reported
that many Americans feel like they have been in a recession for some time.
