The last week has seen a rising tide of anger in Britain at the Israeli
attacks on Lebanon. This is reflected in the mood and size of the two
marches and lobby, all organised at short notice.

This morning we heard the tragic
news of the death of comrade Ted Grant, just a few days after his 93rd
birthday. The news was a great shock to all of us. Despite his age and the
obvious deterioration of his condition in the last period, we had grown used to
the idea that he would always be there, a permanent fixture amidst all the
turbulence and change.

Here we provide a four minute speech by Ted Grant in which he expressed
the confidence that by basing ourselves on the fundamental ideas of
Marx, Engels, Lenin and Trotsky we can build a powerful international
Marxist movement. There can be no greater task than this. You can watch
the video here, here or here.

Last Saturday, July 15,
more than 300 people, amongst them veteran members of the International Brigades,
their relatives, friends and general public, gathered in the heart of London to
remember and pay homage to all those who, seventy years ago and following the
dictates of their internationalist hearts and minds, left everything to fight
for socialism in a Spain devastated by the fascist troops of Franco, Hitler and
Mussolini.

We have long stated that there is no fundamental difference between Blair
and Brown. That is why we welcome the decision of John McDonnell, Labour MP, to
stand for the leadership as the candidate of the left. We also reproduce John McDonnell's full statement on his stand.

The crisis in the
Scottish Socialist Party hit the news when judge Lady Smith jailed SSP policy
co-ordinator, Alan McCombes, for 12 days on May 26th, after he
continually refused to hand over the minutes of a meeting from November 2004.
This was the latest in a series of crises which has stretched the party almost
to breaking point.

This latest of Ken Loach’s films is well crafted and well
thought. It has been thoroughly researched and really gets under the surface of
the processes and the events that helped shape the current situation on the island of Ireland.

The Editorial of the latest issue of Socialist Appeal (July/August
2006) calls for a socialist candidate to oppose Brown in a Labour
leadership election. "The idea of a handover - with no election - that Blair and Brown had
imagined is clearly now dead in the water. There is a rising tide of
opposition to Brown’s succession.
What an ideal opportunity to raise socialist policies throughout the
labour movement!"

Today, Tuesday 17th June, around 1,500 trade unionists gathered at
Westminster Central Hall, London, to launch a fight-back over the
privatisation of public services. This was an excellent turnout for a
weekday rally.

Peugeot is planning to move production from its Coventry plant in the UK
to Slovakia, where labour costs are one quarter of what they are in the UK. Capitalists
have no concern for their workers. They go where they can maximise profits. The
only answer is nationalisation under workers’ control.

On the eve of Unison Conference we are publishing here articles from
the latest edition of Socialist Appeal which deal with some of the
questions facing delegates and activists. Unison has a vital role to
play in the struggle to defend pensions, against the attacks launched
by the government on the welfare state (and the NHS in particular), and
for socialist policies in the labour movement. The conference will also
discuss solidarity with Venezuela, an issue being raised by members of
Hands Off Venezuela in the union.

The concluding section of British Perspectives 2006 looks at the state
of the British economy, which has been propped up by colossal debts for
some time, but is now grinding to a halt. The decline of manufacturing,
and the domination of banking and financial services is an expression
of the enfeeblement of British capitalism. This lies behind the attacks
on the welfare state, on jobs and conditions, and on democracy. All the
conditions are being prepared for a new outbreak of class struggle that
will have a profound impact on British society in the next period.

There
is no greater threat to democratic rights than a capitalist system in fear of
its future. British capitalism has long been in decline, and this decline is
accurately reflected in the crises of the Tory Party. The sickness of British
capitalism also means a growing class polarisation of British society, which at
some stage must be reflected in the Labour Party.

Despite
the almost incessant rainfall we are officially in a drought. There
can be no doubt that climate change is contributing to changing
weather patterns to adversely affect our water supply. This is a
foretaste of what conditions will be like here in the not too distant
future if something is not done to halt and reverse the destruction
of our environment on a global scale.
