By Socialist Appeal
Monday, 19 February 2007
wrong_side_of_the_tracksThe World Institute for Development Economics Research of the United Nations University has carried out what it declares the 'most comprehensive study of personal wealth ever undertaken'. Unsurprisingly it concludes that the wealthy few are getting richer and richer at our expense.

gordonbrownpa_228x200All the figures on the British economy reveal the underlying sickness of the whole system. The indebtedness of the population has reached record levels. Now all the signs are there of a coming serious slowdown. This is what Gordon Brown will inherit as he prepares to become the next Labour Prime Minister.

By Daniel Morley
Friday, 16 February 2007
Over 100 students and trade unionists welcomed John McDonnell to the University of East Anglia on the 9th February. The large turnout from what is an extremely ‘depoliticised' campus, clearly demonstrated that the youth are not apathetic.

If you are serious about changing society, study revolutions! Print E-mail
By Darrall Cozens, Coventry Labour Party and UCU (personal capacity)
Wednesday, 14 February 2007
This year is the 90th anniversary of the Russian Revolution. We celebrate this key anniversary by publishing an article on the need for young people and trade unionists to study theory. Theory, after all, is the generalised experience of past struggles. How better can we prepare for the future? By learning the lessons of the past.

By Irish Republican Socialist Party
Tuesday, 13 February 2007
The replacement of the old Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) with the PSNI has received the support of Sinn Fein leaders. This has opened up a heated debate among Republicans on whether this is acceptable or not. Here we provide three articles written by comrades of the Irish Republican Socialist Party, where they explain why Republican socialists cannot accept such a force.

Bush places his final bet on Iraq Print E-mail
By Maarten Vanheuverswyn
Friday, 09 February 2007
thumb_threadGeorge W. Bush last month announced his "new strategy" for Iraq. His speech consisted of the usual rhetoric about "establishing democracy" and "defeating the terrorists" but particularly a lot of wishful thinking. Like an about to be defeated poker player, US imperialism faces the problem every gambler has when he is losing: if he leaves the table, he won't be able to win back his losses. But a final bet can prove fatal too.

Blairism: The End of an Era – Down with the Blair Monarch! Print E-mail
By Rob Sewell
Wednesday, 07 February 2007

thumb_kingtony3The stench of sleaze emanating from Number 10 Downing Street marks the end of the Blair era. Brown is no alternative. Both men will lead the Labour Party to defeat in the future. What is needed is a genuine left alternative. That is why it is so important that John McDonnell gets the required number of nominations to be able to stand for the party leadership.

Privatisation: Another example of corruption Print E-mail
By Rick Grogan, RMT
Tuesday, 06 February 2007

We live in a world never so technologically advanced, and yet never so unbalanced and chaotic. What we need is a society driven by the edict, "from each according to their ability, to each according to their needs". This article exposes the contradictions of a society driven by private profit.

A reader has objected to some of Michael Roberts' criticisms of Andrew Glyn's latest book. Among others it deals with the question of whether profit rates in the post-war period were affected by wage increases. Roberts replies showing that the fundamental reason for the decline was the same as that stated by Marx.

By William Roche, BECTU member
Friday, 26 January 2007
Workers at ITN, the company that provides news for ITV1 and Channel 4, have forced their management to compromise on their controversial proposal to cut pensions and extend the retirement age from 60 to 65. This comes after unionised staff voted for two 24-hour strikes in response to what were felt intolerable impositions from management.

4 million say no to post office closures! Print E-mail
By Andy Blake, branch secretary London 7 (personal capacity)
Friday, 26 January 2007
Last year 4 million people signed Britain's biggest ever petition to defend their local post office. Yet 2,500 local post offices will close by the end of 2009. The selling-off of the Post Office is a continuation of privatisation policies begun under the Conservative government.

The aim is to destroy a major public asset in the interests of big business. This is what capitalism calls progress.

Audio File: Dialectical Materialism - the Philosophy of Marxism

For those unacquainted with Marxist philosophy, dialectical materialism may seem an obscure and difficult concept. However, for those prepared to take the time to study this new way of looking at things, they will discover a revolutionary outlook that will allow them an insight into and understanding of the mysteries of the world in which we live.
