All the figures on the British economy reveal the underlying sickness of the whole system. The indebtedness of the population has reached record levels. Now all the signs are there of a coming serious slowdown. This is what Gordon Brown will inherit as he prepares to become the next Labour Prime Minister.

Over 100 students and trade unionists welcomed John McDonnell to the University of East Anglia on the 9th February. The large turnout from what is an extremely ‘depoliticised' campus, clearly demonstrated that the youth are not apathetic.

This year is the 90th anniversary of the Russian Revolution. We celebrate this key anniversary by publishing an article on the need for young people and trade unionists to study theory. Theory, after all, is the generalised experience of past struggles. How better can we prepare for the future? By learning the lessons of the past.

The replacement of the old Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) with the PSNI has received the support of Sinn Fein leaders. This has opened up a heated debate among Republicans on whether this is acceptable or not. Here we provide three articles written by comrades of the Irish Republican Socialist Party, where they explain why Republican socialists cannot accept such a force.

On the 6th of February the HOV delegation that went to Venezuela during the December elections, showed video-clips and slides from their visit and spoke about their experience. John McDonnell MP and Alan Woods, founder of the HOV campaign, were among the main speakers, as was the Venezuelan Ambassador, Alfredo Toro Hardy.

Hands Off Venezuela member Melanie McDonald reports on the delegation sent in December to observe the Presidential elections. They were everywhere, at the Co-ops, in the meetings, at the occupied factories and all over the media.

George W. Bush last month announced his "new strategy" for Iraq. His speech consisted of the usual rhetoric about "establishing democracy" and "defeating the terrorists" but particularly a lot of wishful thinking. Like an about to be defeated poker player, US imperialism faces the problem every gambler has when he is losing: if he leaves the table, he won't be able to win back his losses. But a final bet can prove fatal too.

The stench of sleaze emanating from Number 10 Downing Street marks the end of the Blair era. Brown is no alternative. Both men will lead the Labour Party to defeat in the future. What is needed is a genuine left alternative. That is why it is so important that John McDonnell gets the required number of nominations to be able to stand for the party leadership.

We live in a world never so technologically advanced, and yet never so unbalanced and chaotic. What we need is a society driven by the edict, "from each according to their ability, to each according to their needs". This article exposes the contradictions of a society driven by private profit.

It is widely agreed that the main security threat facing Britain today is terrorism. Yet the British Bourgeois insist on maintaining nuclear weapons in an attempt to represent itself as a great economic and political power.

Hospital closures in North Lanarkshire have caused outrage among local residents already suffering from a woefully inadequate health service. Here we see how dangerous PFI policy in our NHS really is.

A reader has objected to some of Michael Roberts' criticisms of Andrew Glyn's latest book. Among others it deals with the question of whether profit rates in the post-war period were affected by wage increases. Roberts replies showing that the fundamental reason for the decline was the same as that stated by Marx.

Workers at ITN, the
company that provides news for ITV1 and Channel 4, have forced their management
to compromise on their controversial proposal to cut pensions and extend the
retirement age from 60 to 65.
This comes after unionised staff voted for two 24-hour strikes in response to what were felt intolerable impositions from management.

Last year 4 million people signed Britain's
biggest ever petition to defend their local post office. Yet 2,500 local post
offices will close by the end of 2009. The selling-off of the Post Office is a continuation of privatisation policies begun under the Conservative government.
The aim is to destroy a major public
asset in the interests of big business. This is what capitalism
calls progress.
