Economy in crisis

Profits, crisis and credit crunch: can 1929 happen again?

The Marxist Theory of Crisis - part 3 Print E-mail
By Mick Brooks
Monday, 26 November 2007
marx02.jpegThe final part of this extended article on Marx's theory of crisis focuses on the tendency for the rate of profit to fall, with reference to the generalised world-wide crash of 1974. The tendency for the rate of profit to fall manifests itself in practice through the development of internal contradictions, as part of a cycle and not, as over-production theorists would have it, as a crash coming out of a clear blue sky.

Venezuela: counterrevolution raises its head - Heinz Dieterich and General Baduel - Part Two Print E-mail
By Alan Woods
Friday, 23 November 2007
bad-dieterich2.jpgAlthough Dieterich does his best to cloud the issue, the facts speak for themselves - Baduel has broken with the revolution, and now stands on the side of the counterrevolution. To propose the unity of the two forces - revolution and counterrevolution - is like hoping to unite fire and water.

wobblies.jpgIn the autumn of 1916 the Industrial Workers of the World, better known as the Wobblies, were trying to organise lumber workers near Everett, Washington in the USA. A series of attempts to organise by the workers had lead to a murderous response from the employers. Charles Ashleigh was appointed to run the Wobblies defence campaign - this article is in memory of him, a soldier of the proletariat.

Venezuela: counterrevolution raises its head - Heinz Dieterich and General Baduel - Part One Print E-mail
By Alan Woods
Thursday, 22 November 2007
baduel-small.jpgThe Marxists have long argued that the only way forward for the Venezuelan revolution is to strike blows against the counterrevolutionary bourgeoisie, by expropriating the bankers, landlords and capitalists, etc. However, there are other voices saying rather different things. One of the most persistent of these voices is that of Heinz Dieterich, who has been waging a noisy campaign in favour of what he calls "Socialism of the XXI Century" - a strange kind of socialism indeed in that it differs very little from capitalism.

By Kenny McGuigan in Glasgow
Thursday, 22 November 2007
flag-of-scotland.jpgIn last May's Scottish Parliament elections the Scottish National Party (SNP) emerged victorious as voters wilted under increasing attacks and cuts in public services - already threadbare after the Thatcher Tory years - by the New Labour-Liberal coalition. Socialist Appeal carried in-depth Marxist analysis at the time when we predicted an SNP victory and the factors that had made it possible.

Multiculturalism – what is it and will it survive? Print E-mail
By Barbara Humphries
Wednesday, 21 November 2007
veil.jpgMulticulturalism is again under attack. And it's not just from the BNP, but members of New Labour. Following the bombings on London in 2005 Ruth Kelly and David Blunkett called for a ‘British identity'. Jack Straw asked women Muslims in his constituency to remove their veils (the niqab), as he feels uncomfortable with them. The  chair of the Commission for  Equalities and Human Rights has urged for integration as a way forward, "to stop us from sleep walking into segregation".

The Marxist Theory of Crisis - part 1 Print E-mail
By Mick Brooks
Monday, 19 November 2007
marx.jpgMarx's theory of crisis has been the source of controversy for more than a century. Many competing schools have been set up, basing themselves on isolated quotes. This is partly because Marx's key observations are scattered through his economic writings. This extended article looks first at the different theories that try to explain capitalist crisis and at how Marx's own theory of crisis fits in with his broader view of capitalist development. The next part will apply this analysis to world capitalism since the Second World War.

labour80slogo.gifIn 1970, just like today, the Labour Party seemed dead from the neck up. After six years of desperately disappointing government, Labour had been unceremoniously bundled out of office. The Tories were back, aiming to put the boot in to the working class.
