Workers in the Street! Print E-mail
By Matt J. Wheatley
Wednesday, 02 January 2008
A single mother in Keighley is being evicted from her residence with two months notice. The ‘owner' of the property does not claim any fault on the part of the worker; calling her an exemplary tenant.

The move is sound business; house prices may fall so it would be better to cash in now and let someone else (e.g. someone poorer) take the loss. Yet this woman is a nurse suffering attacks at work by privatisations, and a mother of four with no other housing options.

Socialism and Religion Print E-mail
By V. I. Lenin in 1905
Thursday, 20 December 2007
lenin_print.jpgSocialist Appeal's ongoing campaign to spread the christmas spirit today publishes Lenin, who wrote in 1905 that: "Those who toil are taught by religion to be submissive and patient while here on earth, and to take comfort in the hope of a heavenly reward. But those who live by the labour of others are taught by religion to practise charity while on earth, thus offering them a very cheap way of justifying their entire existence as exploiters and selling them at a moderate price tickets to well-being in heaven."

By Barbara Humphries
Thursday, 20 December 2007
theshockdoctrine.jpgThe 'Shock Doctrine', the latest from Naomi Klein, is the story of "blank is beautiful - three decades of erasing and reinventing the world". It is about how natural disasters have given capitalists the opportunity to reconstruct cities like New Orleans according to their own whims. But it is not just natural disasters which have given the capitalists the opportunity to advance their interests - there are man-made disasters as well - economic crises and wars.
