A single mother in Keighley is being evicted
from her residence with two months notice. The ‘owner' of the property does not
claim any fault on the part of the worker; calling her an exemplary tenant.
The move is sound business; house prices may fall so it would be better to cash
in now and let someone else (e.g. someone poorer) take the loss. Yet this woman
is a nurse suffering attacks at work by privatisations, and a mother of four
with no other housing options.

The murder of Benazir Bhutto has led to an explosion of popular anger. Pakistan is convulsed by rioting and mass protests. Society has been stirred up to the depths. Raw human emotion has spilled over onto the streets of every city, town and village. The army and police are powerless to halt the tide of indignation. The government is shaken to the core.

Benazir Bhutto has been killed in a suicide bomb attack. The leader of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) had just addressed a rally of PPP supporters in the town of Rawalpindi when the attack took place. First reports talked of at least 100 killed in the attack, but more recent news put the figure at 20. This murderous onslaught on the PPP came in the middle of an election campaign where, after years of military dictatorship, the masses were striving for a change.

Today’s cold-blooded assassination of Benazir Bhutto in Rawalpindi has once again thrown Pakistan into political turmoil, less than two weeks before national elections. Thirty more people have died and 40 injured in the bomb blast after the assassin blew himself up. Millions of supporters of the Pakistan Peoples Party are in a state of shock, disbelief and grief. But they are also angered by this murderous act by the forces of black counter-revolution.

the children called Father Christmas or Santa Claus?

We follow up on the Farepak fiasco, that last year was responsible for wiping out the savings of 150,000 people. Victims are yet to have their savings returned to them - a mere £38 million in total. This despite the government being happy to prop up the collapsing Northern Rock with billions of tax-payers cash.

On the evening
of December 18 two comrades putting up posters and canvassing in Karachi were threatened by
10 armed activists of the MQM organization. They attempted to abduct one of the
comrades but failed to do so thanks to the intervention of local people. All
comrades must be put on alert for any immediate mobilization of support that
may be requested.

Thursday, 20 December 2007 |
Socialist Appeal's ongoing campaign to spread the christmas spirit today publishes Lenin, who wrote in 1905 that: "Those who toil are taught by religion to be submissive and patient while here on
earth, and to take comfort in the hope of a heavenly reward. But those who live
by the labour of others are taught by religion to practise charity while on
earth, thus offering them a very cheap way of justifying their entire existence
as exploiters and selling them at a moderate price tickets to well-being in
heaven."

The 'Shock Doctrine', the latest from Naomi Klein, is the story of "blank is beautiful - three
decades of erasing and reinventing the world". It is about how natural disasters have given capitalists the opportunity to
reconstruct cities like New Orleans according to their own whims. But it is not just natural
disasters which have given the capitalists the opportunity to advance their
interests - there are man-made disasters as well - economic crises and wars.

As part of the build up to the festive season Socialist Appeal is issuing some articles by Marxists looking at the role of religion in the labour movement. This article written in
1945 analyses the relationship between the Soviet state and the
Russian Orthodox Church. There was a clear dividing line between
Lenin's approach to this question and the zig-zag policy later
adopted by Stalin. First published in Workers International News,
October 1945.
