Nurses tell Lansley where to go

The 99% no-confidence vote against Health Secretary Andrew Lansley, passed by RCN delegates at their annual conference in Liverpool, shows the depth of feeling over the governments NHS 'reform' plans.

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) represents a large number of health workers and has traditionally seen itself as being 'non-political.' However under the pressure of successive attacks on the NHS by one government after another, the RCN has become more militant over the years. Although Lansley was visiting the area, he refused an invitation to speak at the conference, hence the no-confidence vote. Delagate after delegate warned of the consequences of the new measures should they take effect. Their message was simple: "Don't become ill!" Lansley response was to apologize for not getting his message across properly. Don't worry - your message has been understood, we just don't like it. This is privatisation of the NHS, pure and simple!

The RCN needs to link up with the other unions in the NHS to mount a serious concerted attack against this government - the public support is there, people are not fools - and the potential June 30th public sector strike day could well provide an opportunity to link up with other workers under attack.
