LONDON SCHOOL STUDENTS UNION NEWSLETTER

Hi everyone,

We had a great meeting on the 27th of July, where we elected an Organisational Committee to be resposible for day to day tasks, like printing out leaflets, updating the website and sending out these emails.

LSSU will be holding a public meeting next Monday, 13th July, with Education Not for Sale, a student group campaigning for free education and for a democratic, fighting NUS.

Ameline Shah will speak on the youth movement in France and the rest of Europe and her involvement in the French school students' union.

The meeting will be on Monday 13th July at 6:30pm in Room B111 at SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies).

In other news, the past few weeks have seen UCU (the lecturers union) go on strike at Manchester and London Metropolitan universities, to protest against planned budget cuts and redundancies. See http://www.ucu.org.uk/index.cfm?articleid=3997 and www.savelondonmetuni.blogspot.com for more info and to send messages of support.

  • The NUT at Haggerston school in Hackney took strike action today (thursday) over proposed redundancies.Teachers voted overwhelmingly (94%) to take action against the restructuring plans, as the management seeks to make good £1.3m losses. Teachers will be out on strike next tuesday, and again in the autumn term. More info http://www.hackneytuc.org.uk/node/430

  • As well as this, the occupation of the roof of Lewisham Bridge primary school continues after parents and demonstraters prevented police and bailiffs from evicting them on the 25th June. Campaigners have succeeded in securing the National Heritage's allocation of the property as a listed building- limiting developers options. More info here

  • Most recently, teachers at St Paul's Way, Tower Hamlets saw support for their planned strike action tomorrow withdrawn by the NUT action committee - against the wishes of the union group at the school. The teachers voted unanimously to take strike action over a threat of redundancies due to plans for the school to be privatised and turned into a trust. This is a shocking betrayal of NUT members who were defending their jobs and should have the absolute support of their trade union leadership.  The NUT's school rep has said the teachers will meet again to discuss their remaining options, including unofficial action.
