This year has undoubtedly been one of the most explosive in living memory. Brexit and the election of Donald Trump as the President of the USA are reflections of the immense anger and resentment which pervades society and is beginning to break out into the open. Millions are rejecting the failed status quo and are desperately seeking a way out of the poverty and humiliation dealt to them by the crisis of capitalism. We must be prepared for the earth-shattering events to come.
Help support the work of Socialist Appeal in fighting for Marxist ideas by donating to our Festive Fighting Fund today, and help us reach our £7,000 target! All donations, large and small, greatly appreciated!
Defend Corbyn! Fight for socialism!
Britain in particular found itself at the centre of world events in 2016, with the Brexit vote, the “chicken coup” in the Labour Party, and Corbyn’s impressive victory in the September Labour leadership election.
But 2017 will likely see even more instability. The Tories are hopelessly split over the question of Brexit and the single market, and Theresa May is being forced to lurch further towards the most reactionary and xenophobic elements in her party - a product of weakness rather than strength. It is by no means ruled out that her government could collapse under the weight of its own contradictions.
Labour must be ready to fight and beat the Tories. But despite their humiliating defeat in the Labour leadership election, the Blairites will continue to try to sabotage Corbyn's leadership of the party and render it a more ‘reliable’ opposition from the point of view of the bosses and the banks.
We cannot allow them to succeed. A fresh crisis is being prepared in Britain, which will threaten further shocks and splits in the British political establishment. It is essential that we build a bold socialist alternative to the discredited ‘centre-ground’ and the xenophobia and false promises of UKIP and their ilk. To do that we must fight both for Corbyn, and for a radical socialist programme for Labour.
The need for Marxism
There has never been a greater need for Marxist ideas in the British labour movement. Socialist Appeal and the International Marxist Tendency are fighting for a socialist programme in the labour and student movements, and providing a Marxist voice for the movements of workers and youth today through our paper, magazines, pamphlets, websites, and books.
Events are moving at lightning speed. Given such turbulent times, it is all the more necessary to have more frequent, fresher material to provide the revolutionary ideas and arguments needed to make sense of the seemingly chaotic situation around us and offer a way forward. For this reason, the successful completion of our Forward to the Fortnightly! campaign, is a major priority for our work next year.
But this important step requires resources. We have no rich backers from the banks or big business. Instead, we rely on the generosity and sacrifice of our supporters. This festive period, we ask that all our readers consider donating to our Fighting Fund collection to help us in our cause - the fight for socialism!
As always, every little helps, and all donations – large and small – are greatly appreciated. Trade union branches, campaigning groups, Marxist societies, and even individuals can also donate in return for greetings in the paper.
Please donate generously today, and help us meet out £7,000 target by raising money locally and approaching those sympathetic to our revolutionary cause.

In the words of Leon Trotsky, the great Russian revolutionary:
“We are fighting for genuine scientific ideas and principles, with inadequate technical, material, and personal means. But correct ideas will always find the necessary corresponding means and forces…There was never a greater cause on earth.”
