Lenin is probably the most slandered individual of the 20th century. As
leader of the Russian Revolution of 1917, he has been attacked by
bourgeois academics, Tory, Labour and Liberal politicians as well as
Establishment figures internationally. His ideas have been distorted
and twisted. His actions have been vilified. So what did Lenin
really stand for? And are his ideas still relevant today? 
For those unacquainted with Marxist philosophy, dialectical materialism may
seem an obscure and difficult concept. However, for those prepared to take the
time to study this new way of looking at things, they will discover a
revolutionary outlook that will allow them an insight into and understanding of
the mysteries of the world in which we live. A grasp of dialectical materialism
is an essential prerequisite in understanding the doctrine of Marxism.
Dialectical materialism is the philosophy of Marxism, which provides us with a
scientific and comprehensive world outlook. It is the philosophical bedrock -
the method - on which the whole of Marxist doctrine is founded.
Heiko Khoo talks on the revolution in Germany in 1989. The defeats suffered by the German working class laid the ground for the rise of Nazism and World War 2. After the war Berlin became the focal point for the cold war. On November 9th 1989 the Berlin Wall was opened after the German Communist Party bureaucracy buckled under pressure from East Germans demonstrating for the democratisation of society.
On the 5 year anniversary of the war in Iraq, the position of US imperialism in the Middle East is becoming untenable. The incursion of Turkish troops into Kurdish Iraq and the stravation blockade of Palestine makes an already difficult situation even worse. US imperialism and their supporters in Europe are facing a potentially devastating defeat. We publish a talk by Alan Woods on the Marxist's attitude to individual terrorism, given at the Socialist Appeal day school in London late last year. Of particular relevance following the assasination of Benazir Bhutto in Pakistan recently, socialism must oppose acts of indiviual terrorism - 'liberals with bombs' - because of the reactionary role they play in the labour movement.
